Robinson County

Audio:

I was browsing arond EZfolk and came across Michael Springer's version (on fiddle) of Robinson County. I had not heard the tune before and was captured by it. I see it's relatively well known, but it was new to me. So I have worked out a version on banjo. I'm not where I can get a capo, so this is played in C rather than in D.

Harlan County Farewell Tune

Audio:

A discussion of tunings in the old-time forum on the hangout reminded me of this tune. I'm tuned in A-modal with the 5th string lowered to G, making this actually in the key of G, assuming I'm tuned to pitch. The A part of this tune is played mostly out of a G-chord position (4th & 1st string at 3th fret, 3rd string at 2nd fret) and dropping down to a C-chord (4th & 1st string at 2nd fret). I learned this from Art Rosenbaum's LP and book.

Lazy John

Audio:

Well, I first heard this tune on Sara Grey's most recent CD,and I loved it. Then Mark Johnson posted a version with himself on fiddle and banjo, and I loved it again. So, I just had to play it.

Rye Straw

Audio:

It seems as though there are many tunes that go by this name. This one is based on a version played on an LP by Pop Wagner and Bob Bovee, available as a CD. You can hear a bit of it at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/popwagner4, it is track 11. It's been a while since I tried, but as I remember what I play meshes just fine with what they play.

Strummin' on My Banjo

Audio:

I heard this played by a couple of fiddlers during a marathon session of only G tunes at the Fox River Valley Folk Festival in Geneva, IL. My version is simplified, but at least I can recognize it. I'd like to find out more about this, is it a song?Through some help from the banjohangout crowd, I find that this tune has been recorded on Rounder by J.P. & Annadeene Fraley, (CD named Maysville), released 01/01/1995.

Whiskey Before Breakfast

Audio:

I used to play the hammered dulcimer pretty often, and I used to play this tune pretty often, so I'm doing my first double track recording. It sounds like a pretty good banjo player putting up patiently with a fairly poor dulcimer player. This version replaces one from 2006-09-13. This one only has one mistake.

Country Blues

Audio:

I worked this out in the 1980s based on Art Rosenbaum's LP & tablature, although he used 3-finger and I use 2-finger picking. My choice and order of verses changes every time I do the tune, except for always starting and ending with the same 2 sets.
