I learned this from a recording made by Chris Ptasnik of a jam session the Gebhart Woods Dulcimer Festival in Morris Illinois, that we were in on Sunday, June 11. He was kind enough to email me the recording on Monday morning. The tune is a modern one that sounds like an old tune, written by Peter Lippincott and posted here by his permission. I think I learned this from an Ann Mayo Mure, Ed Trickett, and Gordon Bok album.

Modeled after the great Clarence (Tom) Ashley version. This tune was my goal in 1976, and is still one of my favorites. I even sing it. This one replaces a shorter version recorded on 2006-05-13

Posted as part of a BHO Sound Off "post your own version". I used to play an octave-higher part, but I don't think I can really do that nowadays. I never worked out the nice jazzy stuff that a bluegrass player will do with the tune.

This was used as part of a rendition of "Train on the Island" sung by Joe Hickerson. Sara Gray provided a banjo backup, playing the tune of June Apple. It took me years before I made the connection.

I actually learned this as Seeing the Elephant from a Debbie McLatchy record. My version is based on her singing.

I hadn't known about this tune until a sound off was posted on the BanjoHangout: http://www.banjohangout.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=53332 What a great tune. I had just changed the strings to some light gauge Elixer. They sound great on this tune-very chimey. However, I'm not sure about in other tunings. We'll have to see.
