I first heard this tune from a BHO posting by Chris Ptasnik, and then bought the CD by the Airtight String Band of Charleston, IL, which has it. I was taken by the tune, did not learn it then, just stuck it in the "list of good tunes I should learn". Then I recently got the re-issue CDs of the Indian Creek Delta Creek Boys, and worked it out on mandolin while I was waiting around in the car before playing for one of those cemetery walk events. This has always been one of my favorites. When I was in grade school, and even younger, it seemed that some version of The Darby Ram was almost as common as John Henry. I guess mine is some sort of mixture of versions I heard way back when, and also hearing "Didn't He Ramble" at some time.

I used to do this in G tuning, but in the clawhammer forum on BanjoHangout someone mentioned that they always did it in double C (capoed to D). I tried it out, and I like it much more. I decided I'd try singing, although I don't remember the verses very well. My voice sounds nothing like I think it should.
